GPC and Exhibition Competitions

GPC has always encouraged members to enter exhibitions in Guernsey, Jersey and further afield.  The Eisteddfods in Guernsey and Jersey, exhibition competitions by Hants, Cotswold, SPF are key exhibition competitions that GPC has supported over the years.

Rising postage rates has changed the shape of competitions making the posting of prints to the UK and further afield too prohibitive.   Competitions have in recent times moved to digital rather than prints and online entries or posting of Cds is now common.  Falling numbers of entries has been replaced by significant increases in numbers entering competitions.

GPC is continuing to arrange submissions for club members to local competitions and as necessary post items to Jersey and some UK exhibitions such as the SPF (Southern Print Federation).

Members are now encouraged to enter competitions themselves as this is now very easy using the Internet.

Why Enter Exhibition Competitions?

Show off your work to a wider audience;  How good is my work? Compare your work on a National or International stage;  Get letters after your name in recognition of your work;  Extend your competitive instinct!

Entering prints and images into Club competitions can be a narrow field to obtain a judgement of how good your work is and how much it is appreciated.  Web sites where you can post your images for comment are useful but do not necessarily give an objective comparison against similar entries from around the UK or the world.  Experienced judges and judging involving a panel of experienced judges can add to your recognition.

Entering and achieving in National or International competitions can give a real sense of achievement.  You do not have to share those disappointments!

National v International?

National - BPE e.g. BPE1*, BPE2*, etc

British Photographic Exhibitions, BPE, crown awards and distinctions.  The local round held by the Guernsey Salon of Photography is an example of the exhibition competitions held throughout the UK.  If you have had an entry to the Guernsey Salon accepted then you already have a point towards the required 25 points to gain the Crown Award BPE1*.

International - FIAP e.g. AFIAP, EFIAP, etc

The PAGB, Photographic Alliance of Great Britain, supports the Federation Internationale De L’Art Photographique, FIAP, honours and distinctions.  Wider requirements apply for FIAp such as 30 acceptances, 10 different works in 10 different exhibitions in 5 different countries.

There are a number of different International competitions with awards and many of the FIAP competitions also apply for other awards such as PSA, Photographic Society of America.
